What is Psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis was founded on the discovery that we are often unconscious of the many factors that determine our emotions and behavior. Psychoanalytic therapies are approaches of addressing peoples emotional distress that originate essentially from the discoveries and ideas of Sigmund Freud. The prevailing theme of nearly all psychoanalytic approaches to therapy is that the more honest we can be with ourselves the greater our chances of living a satisfying and fulfilling life. Psychoanalysts appreciate that this kind of awareness or truthfulness about our motives and desires does not come easily or naturally. The aim of nearly all psychoanalytic therapies is to cultivate an increased recognition of what is not conscious and take responsibility for what is painful to see in our lives. Psychoanalysis is essentially a collaborative process of helping people talk freely and discover the truth about themselves and their life history. Psychoanalysis is a form of truth seeking.

The quality of the relationship between therapist and patient is a critical factor in all successful therapies. Psychoanalysis is built upon a collaborative partnership, in the course of which the patient becomes aware of the formative aspects of their past not simply intellectually, but emotionally–by re-experiencing them with the analyst. Through the course of analysis people look beyond their troubling symptoms to understanding the causes of their distress. By learning why they feel the way they feel and how these feelings came about, patients develop a greater appreciation and understanding of themselves. The benefits of psychoanalysis extends beyond relief of symptoms to inspiring greater self acceptance and creative growth. Psychoanalysis aims high in its faith that by living the examined life and knowing ourselves we can achieve satisfaction in love, work and play.
