MARRIAGE/COUPLES THERAPY
People begin their partnerships with high hopes and many expectations. Unfortunately, many of these expectations are unrealistic and cannot be realized in the partnership. Eventually life stress, disappointments in the relationship and the tedium of daily routine can lead to disenchantment and disillusionment. Tensions begin to build, couples argue, distance grows and nothing gets resolved despite tremendous efforts by both partners. Often couples entering therapy are already considering separation or divorce and doubt whether the relationship can be saved.
If a couple comes in already planning to separate or divorce, therapy can help them do this in the least damaging way (to themselves, to their children).
However, when two people are dissatisfied in their relationship but are willing to explore their troubles and take responsibility for their part, the possibility of working things through exists. Therapy provides a safe and nonpartisan place to improve communication and begin to listen to each other. It provides an avenue to address past injuries and resolve longstanding conflicts.
Mature adult relationships require commitment and a willingness to “stay in the frying pan” when the heat is on, or a willingness to tend the fire when the heat is off. Couple's therapy can help couples make progress whatever is or isn’t going on.
Sometimes we request to work with partners individually. Meeting individually helps us better understand how each partner’s history influences expectations and disillusionments in relationship.
